What is a Penalty Course and How Do I Take It?

Penalty courses are additional courses that students are required to take when their General Weighted Average (GWA) falls below the program’s required standard. These courses serve as an opportunity to improve academic standing by helping raise the GWA to at least a flat 2.0 or better.

Penalty courses are typically subjects from other programs but are credited as MIS electives (e.g., DCS – CMSC 209).

Important Reminders:

  • Availability: These courses are only offered during specific terms, so schedules may vary.

  • Prerequisites: Some courses may require you to complete prerequisite subjects before enrollment.

  • Purpose: Successfully completing penalty courses can help you meet the GWA requirement and return to regular status in your program.
